For detailed readings of the manuscript at various stages of production, I am indebted to Bernard Benstock, Robert M. Jordan, and Lorna Weir. For travel grants which made it possible for me to read early formulations of some of the material on Vico and Finnegans Wake in Venice (1985) and on catechism and catachresis in Copenhagen (1986), I am indebted to the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Without a Leave Fellowship from the same agency in 1984—85 and a year’s leave from the English Department of the University of British Columbia, this project would have been impossible. Without Paul Bouissac’s invitation to give a version of the manuscript as a course on “Semiotics of the Joyce System” at the Ninth International Summer Institute for Semiotic and Structural Studies in Toronto in 1987, Writing Joyce might have gone on forever.
