ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
IN WRITING THIS BOOK, I am so very grateful for the generous help and encouragement I’ve received from many people. My great thanks to Allison Chaplin and Lesley Bolton, my editors at Indiana University Press, for their enthusiasm and expert help guiding the book through the publication process. I also give many thanks to members of the press’s staff, particularly Sophia Hebert and Vickrutha Sudharsan, for their very useful and patient help. My thanks, too, to Eleanor Ripp, Jillian Kehoe, and Joslyn DeVinney for their editorial aid.
Over the years, I’ve been very lucky to have such warm and supportive friends and family. My late husband, Averill (Bill) Williams, with his sense of humor was always encouraging and supportive, as were my dear friends, including Marlene Schwarz, Phillip K. Cohen, Elinor Balka, Roberta Siegel Lutzker, Ed Tassinari, Robert E. Kessler, Rita Solow-Schneyman, Judith Hoffman, and many more, including my friends and neighbors in Manhattan and the Berkshires.
I also thank my family for their encouragement, including my sister, Toby Costas; my cousins Harriet Ginsberg, Cheryl Reynolds, and Karen Finegan and their families; my three nieces—Mia Bhimani, Leah Buratti, and Rachel Costas; and, especially for this book, my nephew David Costas, who as a pilot gave me useful information about aircraft warning systems. As always, I dedicate this book to my late parents, Joseph and Goldie Wosk, who were so warm and encouraging all those many years.
