“Joseph Haydn’s Keyboard Music”
IDENTIFICATION OF
HAYDN’S WORKS
I have tried to identify Haydn’s works in the manner in which they are best known. Symphonies are identified according to the old Mandyczewski numbers, string quartets according to the standard opera. All other instrumental works are designated according to their numbers in Hoboken/WERKVERZEICHNIS. Vocal works are referred to by their title and/or Hoboken number.
The keyboard works dealt with here belong to the following six groups established by Hoboken:
Hob. XIV | accompanied divertimentos and concertinos |
Hob. XV | keyboard trios |
Hob. XVI | solo sonatas |
Hob. XVII | Klavierstücke (keyboard pieces) |
Hob. XVIIa | keyboard music for four hands |
Hob. XVIII | keyboard concertos |
Within these groups Hoboken has identified each work by an arabic number following the roman numeral (Hob. XVI: 2) or by a letter indicating key in combination with an arabic numeral (Hob. XVI :C2).
Movements within cyclic compositions are indicated for all the instrumental works by the last number following a slash; e.g., Hob. XVI: 1/1 is the first movement of Hob. XVI: 1, but String Quartet Op. 20/3/4 is the fourth movement of the third quartet of Op. 20.
For ease of reference, collations of various edition numberings for the solo sonatas and the keyboard trios follow.
