Semyon Kruglikov (1857-1910) was a music critic and a professor. At one time he was the Director of the Moscow Philharmonic School. In Moscow he was a popularizer of the works of the composers of the “Mighty Handful.”

Even before the raising of the curtain, the orchestra was playing the solemn ringing of the bells. I recall how the author played it on the piano and how perfect it was: the imitation of big and small bell ringing was masterfully captured.1
