“Optical Signals”
Suggested Reading from Scientific American
A consistent comment received by Peter Klopfer and me concerning our textbook (Klopfer and Hailman, 1967) pertained to the usefulness of the appendix that provided a list of articles from the monthly magazine Scientific American. For the convenience of the reader who is not technically involved with subjects treated in this volume, I have compiled a selected list of articles, grouped by chapter. A few articles are included under two or more chapters. I have avoided many interesting but tangential articles (e.g., a large number on lasers), selected from an array in other areas (e.g., human visual perception) and cited only the most recent articles on still other topics (e.g., mechanisms of vision). In many cases, there has been no article in the last decade that treats certain material mentioned in a chapter, and there are no central articles for chs 7 and 9. The articles listed below are not included in the terminal bibliography of the book unless specifically cited in the text.
