“Phonological Markedness and Distinctive Features”
Revised, SPE, and PSA Specifications
of the Representative Segmental
Inventory
As one can see by comparing the representative inventory to the inventories of some of the languages in Appendix A, there is more complexity than was originally postulated in the section on segmental strength. The most complex segments used in this inventory were kxh and kx’, aspirated and glottalized dorsal affricates with ten positive specifications each. There were several languages with segments needing ten positive specifications: /č̄h/ of Urdu, of Lapp, and some of the clicks in !ko and Kung. The following segments of Kung needed eleven:
and /čx?/. The existence of very few segments needing more than ten positive specifications suggests that the averages extracted from the specifications of the anthropophonic representations are reasonably representative of what linguists are likely to find in future investigations.
