A Note on Transliteration and Editions

In the interests of precision, the International Scholarly System of transliteration is used throughout this volume. For the nonspecialist reader we provide the following table:

Unless otherwise indicated, the “large Academy” edition of Puškin’s works (1937-59, 17 vols., Moscow: Akademija Nauk) is the one normally cited, with the abbreviation “PSS” (Polnoe sobranie sočinenij). Several authors have preferred to use the system in The Dictionary of Puškin’s Language (Slovar’ jazyka Puškina, 1956-61, ed. V. V. Vinogradov, 4 vols., Moscow: Gosudarstvennoe izdatel’stvo inostrannyx nacional’nyx slovarej), where, for example, “EO.I.50” refers to the “large Academy” edition of Evgenij Onegin (Eugene Onegin), Chapter I, Stanza 50.
