CHRONOLOGY

1889Bom July 5, at Maisons-Laffitte (Seine et Oise).

1899After her husband’s death, Mme Cocteau, with her three children, Jean, Paul, and Marthe, live in Paris, at 45, rue La Bruyère. Jean attends the lycée Condorcet.

1906Edouard de Max reads Cocteau’s poems at the Théâtre Fémina.

1912Meets Serge de Diaghileff and Igor Stravinsky.

1913Accompanies Stravinsky to Leysin, Switzerland.

1915Friendship with the aviator Roland Garros. Meets Erik Satie and Paul Morand.

1916Frequents Montparnasse, in company with Apollinaire, Jacob, Reverdy, Cendrars. Meets Picasso.

1917Performance of Parade, at the Châtelet.

1918Founds, with Cendrars, les Editions da la Sirène. Stravinsky quarrels with him because of Le Coq et l’Arlequin.

1919Meets Raymond Radiguet.

1923Death of Radiguet.

1925Meets Jacques Maritain. Visits Villefranche. Meets Christian Bérard. Reconciliation with Stravinsky. Excommunicated by the surrealists.

1931Illness at Toulon.

1936Travels around the world.

1937Helps the boxer Al Brown to recapture his title of champion.

1941Moves to 36, rue de Montpensier in the Palais-Royal section of Paris.

1947Occupies house at Milly-la-Forêt (Seine et Oise). Visits United States. Theatre tour in the Middle East.

1950Decorates Villa Santo-Sospir, in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat.

1955Joins the Académie Royale de Belgique and the Académie Française.

1956Honorary degree from Oxford. Paints frescoes of the Chapelle Saint-Pierre in Villefranche-sur-Mer.

1963Dies October 11, at Milly-la-Foret.
