“BOLSHEVIK FEMINIST: The Life of Aleksandra Kollontai”
NOTE ON SOURCES
Kollontai is unusual among Bolsheviks in the amount of autobiographical writing she produced. So many and varied are these materials that a word needs to be said about them. Complete citations for each of the items referred to in this note are given in the bibliography that follows.
First, Kollontai wrote the journalistic narratives based on her diaries, which have been discussed in the text. Her initial such effort was Po rabochei Evrope [Around Workers’ Europe] in 1912; then in the twenties she produced Otryvki iz dnevnika 1914 g. [Fragments from a Diary] and V tiur’me Kerenskogo [In Kerensky’s Prison]. In addition to these long reminiscences about relatively short periods (1909-10, August 1914, August 1917), a few snippets of Kol- lontai’s diaries, on which the books were based, have appeared. They are most revealing about her daily moods, although they have been carefully edited to remove any disagreements with Lenin.
During the twenties Kollontai wrote a second type of autobiographical work, the memoir article. The first article, “Avtobiograficheskii ocherk” [An Autobiographical Sketch], published in 1921, covered her life up to that year, in the stiff, impersonal prose that was considered good taste among Bolsheviks. She told what she had done but glossed over both her own feelings and her opposition activity.
Kollontai made another attempt to recount her life in an article for the Soviet Granat encyclopedia collection of short sketches of the leading Bolsheviks, published between 1925 and 1927. Here she added a few details to the 1921 outline, but again provided only delicate clues to the more controversial aspects of her life. In 1926 or early 1927 she wrote a more revealing piece, “Ziel und Wert meines Lebens” [The Goal and Worth of My Life], which was published in a German collection of articles on the lives of leading European women. Iring Fetscher, the German editor who reissued this article in 1970, has restored the deletions Kollontai made from the original galleys.
All of these sketches and memoirs provide a survey of the events of Kollon- tai’s life. Generally they avoid her feuds with the party, play down her Menshevik affiliation before 1915, and ignore her private life. In 1939 she began writing a memoir revealing the whole woman. Only a portion of this final, multi-volume work has been published; it appeared in Swedish as Den första etappen [The First Steps] in 1945. That same year a slightly expurgated version was published in the Soviet magazine Oktiabr'. It is here that the best picture of Kollontai’s parents and the young Shura emerges, and the life, humor, and grace of the book make one wish the Soviet government would publish it in its entirety.
After she retired Kollontai continued to write and rewrite her memoirs. She assembled a voluminous archive, which is now in the Marx-Lenin Institute in Moscow, seen only by a few Soviet scholars. Bits of her writing on the revolutionary years have appeared, most recently in a collection entitled Iz moei zhizni i raboty [From My Life and Work], but the Workers’ Opposition and her theories on erotic love remain too controversial to discuss. Soviet authors present a sanitized Kollontai—obedient servant of Lenin, life-long Bolshevik, advocate of day-care centers.
The biographical material on Kollontai is of very uneven quality. The most important sources are referred to frequently in the text, but a word on several studies is in order here. The worshipful biography by Isabel de Palencia is generally of little use. The book by Gustav Johansson, a Swedish Communist who used the pseudonym Carsten Halvorsen, also suffers from his admiration for Kollontai, and from the fact that it stops with the outbreak of the revolution; he and Kollontai agreed that he should not deal with the later, more controversial years. Nevertheless, Johansson supplies useful information obtained directly from Kollontai.
Margaret Pertzoff made the first effort at a scholarly biography in a doctoral dissertation, “Lady in Red: A Study of the Early Career of Alexandra Mikhailovna Kollontai.” The bibliography she amassed was most useful, although it has since been superseded by the impressive lists compiled by Henryk Lenczyc and by Kaare Hauge. Professor Hauge’s dissertation is an important work, covering the diplomatic period of Kollontai’s life and based on extensive research in Scandinavia.
Four Soviet historians deserve mention. Anna Itkina, a young Zhenotdel worker during the civil war, has written the only full-length Soviet biography of Kollontai, the second edition of which is most useful. Emelian Mindlin has produced a fictionalized account of her life, Ne dom, no mir, which I have not used because its content—including whole conversations derived from unnamed sources—is unreliable. I. M. Dazhina, the editor of two recent collections of Kollontai’s writings, has provided valuable chronological and biographical details. Finally, Grigorii Petrov has published a number of informative articles on Kollontai during World War I.
The following bibliography, based on the bibliographies compiled by Pertzoff, Lenczyc, and Hauge combined with the results of my own burrowing through periodicals, represents an attempt to list all editions of Kollontai’s writings. Although probably not complete, since Kollontai was so prolific and since her work appeared in so many editions, it is the fullest list to date. Other sources given below are among those consulted in the preparation of this book.
